How to clean a laptop screen

Do you know how to clean a laptop screen? It’s safe and easy if you use a high-quality microfiber cloth that is made specifically for electronics.

Why use microfiber

This is why microfiber is the best way to clean your laptop or other electronic screens:

  • Safely removes fingerprints, smears, and grease
  • Ideal for Phones, Tablets, iPads, Kindles, e-Readers, PDAs & GPSs
  • Cleans without chemicals or solvents
  • Removes more than 99% of bacteria

How to clean your laptop screen

  • Wipe the dust off of your screen using the dry cloth
  • Lightly dampen a corner of the cloth and wipe your screen
  • Use the dry area of the cloth to completely dry and polish your screen

Here’s how to take care of your electronic screen cloth

  • Rinse in warm water and hang to dry
  • Can be washed in a washing machine with a small amount of detergent
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener
  • Guaranteed for 300 washings

Where to buy

I use this one from E-cloth:

Do not use a tissue, pre-moistened wipe, or other fabric to clean your laptop screen. Anything other than microfiber can scratch your screen and leave it covered in dusty threads.

  1. My laptop screen is always dirty because I never knew the best way to clean it, so thank you. What about the cloths you get in your eye glasses case. Do you know if they are typically microfiber cloths? Would that be a suitable alternative?

    • Hi, Braden:
The cloths that come with eyeglasses are microfiber, although the ones I have seen are not the same high quality as the ones from E-cloth. There is another cloth available from E-cloth that is made specifically for glasses. My first choice would be to use the good ones from E-cloth but if that’s not available, the one that comes with eyeglasses would be better than other alternatives. Thanks for asking! Theresa

  2. Thanks for the great screen cleaning tips. Good that you can use it also on smartphones and tablets. My iphone get so easily dirty. By the way Is it possible to use e-cloth on flat screen tv’s?

    • Yes, this also works on flat screen tv’s. First, remove the dust with a dry cloth. Moisten a corner of the cloth to remove spots and dry with the part of the cloth that is still dry. Thanks for asking!

  3. Hi Theresa,
This post just came at the right time. The screen has so many fingerprint marks all over, and need a good clean. I never knew what is the safe way to wipe it , now I have no excuse for a dirty screen.
    Thank you fo the hint.

  4. Hi Theresa,
Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t know there are specific materials for cleaning laptop screen. I think I’m going to get one. I like the fact that It’s not really expensive.

  5. Well, will you look at that! Here I was browsing the internet when I noticed a layer of dust on my screen and tried to remove it with my shirt sleeve (it’s a guy thing…I think). It all just ended up clumped up in the corners and sides of my screen.
So figured there must be something better and here I am. Do they sell a larger size for big screen televisions?

    • Hi, Paul:
E-cloth does not have a larger cloth for big screen televisions, but the one for electronics will work fine unless the screen is super dirty. In that case, you may just have to do it in sections, rinsing and drying the cloth between cleaning sessions. They do make a cloth especially for glasses and they make a larger cloth for windows and mirrors. That one is not as silky, though, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

  6. Great post! I tend to clean my phone every night, however, I’m not the same with my laptop screen. I have noticed that I wait to clean my screen until it begins to bother me. I will be purchasing an e-cloth and using it on my laptop because bacteria travels, ha. Thanks for this post.
